Emerson to Automate New High-Efficiency Unit at TAURON Power Plant in Poland

$76 million contract includes automation technologies and services for 910-megawatt ultra-supercritical generating unit

PITTSBURGH—Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), has been awarded a $76 million contract to automate a new 910-MW generating unit at TAURON Wytwarzanie’s power station in Jaworzno, Poland. The unit will provide new generating capacity that meets stringent European Union emission targets.

Expected to go online in 2019, the clean-coal generating unit will be based on ultra-supercritical technology, which enables highly efficient electricity generation with low emissions.

“With the new unit, TAURON further strengthens its ability to provide reliable, low-emissions power to the Polish grid,” said Edward Kasprzak, vice president of Rafako, the project’s engineer-procure-construct contractor. “Emerson’s power-industry experts have automated more than 100 ultra-supercritical units worldwide, and their capabilities for managing complex automation and electrical projects will help us deliver the full benefits of this technology.”

Emerson will serve as the project’s main automation contractor and main electrical contractor, providing comprehensive design, engineering, installation, commissioning, and start-up support services. The combined role enables specialists at Emerson’s power engineering center in Warsaw to streamline design and engineering activities, reduce the execution schedule including commissioning and start-up phases, and help minimize project risk.

TAURON will use Emerson’s Ovation™ control system to monitor and control all major components of the new unit. This coordinated control will enable faster ramp-ups, optimized production and flexible operation to meet changing market demand.

Emerson’s Pervasive Sensing™ technology, including a broad range of wired and wireless measurement instruments and analyzers, will help plant personnel maintain a comprehensive view of the unit’s operations. In addition, Emerson’s asset management and machinery health technology make it easy to detect potential problems before they affect operations.

“Our industry and automation experts understand the challenges power generators face in building and running ultra-supercritical units,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president, Emerson Process Management. “Each project provides new opportunities for our team to demonstrate not only our technologies, but our design and engineering capabilities. We are delighted that we can contribute to Poland’s ongoing program to enhance its power-generating assets.”

This is one of several major power station contracts for Emerson in Poland, including the new 1,075-MW, ultra-supercritical unit being constructed at the Kozienice Power Station.
